October 15, 1941: At about 1530 hours (C741) Squadron Leader Charles Eardley Wilmot (AFC), Officer Commanding No. 2 Squadron, while walking across a taxi strip to an aircraft which he was to take up, was struck by the airscrew of another aircraft taxiing along the strip, and was almost instantly killed. Squadron Leader Wilmot was one of the oldest active flying instructors in the RCAF having been training pupils in the last was from 1917-19.

Citation: This officer as a flying instructor and presently as Examining Officer has been outstanding in the execution of his duties . By his quiet determination, cheerfulness and efficiency he has been a continuous source of inspiration to junior instructors and trainees. Flight Lieutenant Armstrong has devoted every effort in obtaining the best results from the pupils under his charge which has been exemplified in the many excellent pilots trained by him.

October 4, 1940: Group Captain Frank McGill presented wings and addressed the 28 graduates. First class to graduate from ITS.

"The wings you are getting today represent more than anything else in the world. They represent your admission to the service as a pilot in His Majesty's Service, and that to my mind is the greatest honor any man can have."

December 9, 1940 completed the intermediate training course at Uplands (September 30 - December 9, 1940)

Pilot-Officer Ron Phillips, of Adelaide acknowledged to be the best all-round pilot of the RAAF party which arrived recently in England from Canada under the Empire Training Scheme, told ' The Argus' representative the party had had a fine time in Canada.

"Although it was very cold, and once as low as 30 below, it was generally quite good flying weather. Living conditions in Canada were good. We were able to buy American cigarettes at the equivalent of 7d a package of 20. We were also issued with such useful items as zip-fastened snowboots, as ordinary leather isn't much good for tramping in deep snow. All our fellows leached a good level of proficiency.

"I must say we are surprised to see so little real bomb damage in London. We had thought to see great areas smashed up, but driving by motor-bus from the station to the RAF receiving depot, I noticed only a house down here and there.

"The blackouts are a bit hard to take because there is no such thing in Canada. Ottawa is a blaze of light, with the principal buildings even floodlit.

"A big party of Canadians accompanied us over here.

"I hope to be able to fly Spitfires or Hurricanes and, maybe, some of these new fighters they are talking about, but I must first put in time In an advanced training school somewhere," said Pilot-Officer Phillips.

Pilot Officer Phillips was killed May 28, 1941 while serving with No. 3 (RAF) Squadron

Australia's first monthly commitment for Canadian training was 40 pilots, 42 observers and 72 air gunners . Having passed their initial and elementary flying courses in Australia, the pilot trainees in this quota made up the first draft .

They left Australia in the Awatea on September 5th and disembarked at Vancouver on September 27th, nine months after the Ottawa Conference had created the Empire Air Training Plan.

There was keen interest in their arrival and their welcome by the Canadian Government and people was extremely cordial. After a formal welcome in which the Lieutenant-Governor of British Columbia took part, the airmen in their distinctive blue uniform marched through crowd-lined streets to entrain for No. 2 Service Flying Training School at Uplands, near Ottawa, which they reached on September 30th.

Soon after the first RAAF draft arrived at Uplands, the Department of Air released the following bulletin:

"Royal Canadian Air Force instructors are pleased with the flying standard of the Australians, all of whom were quickly able to fly the Yales.

"Since then they had been so inundated with offers of hospitality, that they have had to suggest to hostesses that, while they greatly appreciate their warmheartedness, they were, after all, at Uplands to work.

"The men are comfortable, happy and popular and very satisfied with the food. They have created an excellent impression, and have aroused great enthusiasm whenever they have marched."

Earlier it had been decided that, training requirements permitting, Australian trainees would be allocated to units in quotas of not fewer than 15.

Shortly after their arrival in Ottawa, Bob Uhrig, Joe McCullough and Arthur Schwager, three of the Aussie pilot trainees paid a visit the the newsroom of the Ottawa Citizen.

They were welcomed to Ottawa by Mayor Stanley Lewis, who happened to be visiting the newsroom.

Bob Uhrig commented: "I say, I wish you would correct a few mistaken ideas about Australia. You know we DO speak English and the country is not full of black men."

Arthur Schwager added: "There are more than 6,000 back home waiting to get a crack at Jerry. We consider ourselves fortunate to be among the first chosen. We are the envy of the rest at home, who are itching to see action.

"Our accent is not all English. We slur our words. You fellows sound a bit Yankee to us."

Sadly, Uhrig, Schwager and McCullough would not survive the war.

The 12-week course at Uplands was completed by the first draft just before the full effects of the Canadian winter had been experienced. Upon completion of the course, they graduates were qualified to wear Pilot's Badge under authority A.F.A.O. A51/2 Para 4.

At the "wings parade" 11 a.m. on November 22, 1940, 37 of the draft were awarded their pilot's flying badge - 'wings' by Sir Thomas William Glasgow, the Australian High Commissioner to Canada before a gathering of Australian and Canadian friends.

"It is a great pleasure to me to be here today to present 'wings' to you young Australians who have just qualified to wear them - the first Australians to do so in Canada under this great joint air training plan."

"I have been most interested and gratified at the satisfactory reports I have received from time to time on your training and bearing, and I congratulate you all most heartily on having reached this stage.

"These wings you are to receive today are insignia you may wear with just pride. They show to the world that you are fully qualified pilots in His Majesty's Air Force.

"You will now do a short period of advanced training here, and
then proceed to England to operational training units. Make the most of your opportunities and heed the advice of your competent instructors, because the lessons you are going to learn in the next few weeks will stand you in good stead when you make contact with the enemy.

"You are indeed crusaders. You will go forth thoroughly trained and equipped. You will fight side by side with airmen from all parts of the Empire, and from the countries of our gallant allies. Your cause is a just one. You will fight for freedom and justice, for humanity, and will play an important part in bringing about the defeat of our ruthless foe.

"Good luck to you all and happy landings.

"Finally, I would like to congratulate all present on parade for your smart appearance, and to thank the Commanding Officer, Group Captain McGill, his Officers, N.C.O.'s and airmen, for the warmth of the welcome they have given their Australian comrades, and the high standard of service flying instruction that has been imparted to them at this school."

December 9, 1940 completed the intermediate training course at Uplands (September 30 - December 9, 1940).

On December 25, 1940 the first Australians trained under the Empire Air Scheme landed in England . This party of twelve officers and twenty-three sergeant pilots had left Australia in July and had completed their flying training at Uplands.

407041 Acting F/Lt. Montague Charles Carrington Cotton
Distinguished Flying Cross - No. 17 Squadron
Citation: Displayed great courage and devotion to duty during fighting Burma. One occasion aerodrome attacked by strong force Japanese aircraft. Cotton immediately took off engaged enemy alone. After shooting down bomber his aircraft attacked by ten fighters. Burst of force from one punctured both petrol tanks and Cotton's left leg shattered. Despite this succeeded making perfecxt landing at aerodrome. Earlier same day distinguished himself during air raid by our aircraft on Moulmein Aerodrome.

400044 Pilot Officer John Phillip McKechnie
Distinguished Flying Cross - No. 242 Squadron
Citation: This officer has lead his section on numerous important daylight attack on enemy shipping. Displaying great leadership and determination often in face heavy fire from ships and ground defences McKechnie has contributed materially to successes achieved. Has also participated in many fighter sweeps and bomber escorts. Once he was instrumental in guiding rescue launch to one of our pilots who had been forced to descend into sea in mid channel. Throughout McKechnie has shown high degree skill and courage.

Course (9): August 17 - December 10, 1940

Wings Parade held for Course No. 9 JATP at 1400 hours.

Group Captain Frank S. McGill, officer commanding the station, addressed the parade prior to presenting wings to the graduates in the station drill hall.

"What you are training for now is to fight the enemy of the whole world. He is an enemy who has no respect for truth and fair play as you men and your officers have and none of the scruples that you and I respect.

"I trust that you will always bring honor to the wings, as did Bishop, Barker, Collishaw and other airmen have done. I wish you all the best of luck and hope you will bring honor to this station, its corps and your instructors, with the wings you are to receive today."

Course members then stepped forward as the station adjutant read their names. Group Captain McGill shook the hand of each graduate, after which the graduate saluted his superior officer before group Captain McGill pinned wings on the left breast of their tunic.

Following the ceremony, the graduates marched past Group Captain McGill as he took the salute at the presentation table.

First intake under amalgamation of ATS and ITS.

Group Captain Frank McGill addressed the graduates and presented their pilot wings in the station drill hall at 1430 hours. One by one, the airmen stepped forward, saluted and had their pilot's flying badge pinned on their tunics by Group Captain McGill. He told the 54 graduates to avoid low flying, showing off over towns or girls' houses and aerobatics.

"I hope if you are posted overseas that you will benefit by the training you have received from your instructors.

"You will be fighting against unscrupulous opponents, deviod of any idea of fair play or sense of sportsmanship.

"Shoot the dirty dogs down."

Air Minister C.G. 'Chubby' Power paid high tribute to Group Captain McGill and his instructional staff for their effort to complete the course on time despite bad weather.

"Our weather in November and December at Uplands as at many other training schools across Canada was poor for flying, due to fog and rain.

"Training plan students are supposed to have 50 hours flying time every 24 days, while school instructors are supposed to fly only 70 hours a month giving instruction to the students.

"Making use of the fine weather we have had in January, Group Captain McGill and his instructional staff have been flying as high as 110 to 115 hours a month to make up the delay experienced in November and December.

"They have been working wonderfully hard, and they graduated their class the other day, right on the dot. They deserve great credit."

March 13, 1941 - William D. Reid was given permission to take off from Syracuse Municipal Airport after making an "emergency landing". A deputy collector of customs, Thomas J. McCarthy, said he was satisfied Reid had nothing with him but clothing and maps and was out of gas. Reid said he became lost in "heavy weather" when he took off from Uplands, bound for Trenton.

Group Captain Wilfred A. Curtis takes over command of No. 2 SFTS, Uplands - switching positions with Group Captain McGill, who was posted to Curtis' former director of posting and records position at Air Force headquarters.

Group Captain McGill addressed the parade bidding farewell to Uplands and welcoming Group Captain Curtis.

"Turning out pilots is what we are here for, and we have done it as well as anyone can. I appreciate all you have done. We have kept ahead of schedule and we have turned out pilots who are as capable as any who have been trained in Canada.

"He (Curtis) has been itching to get out on a job like this. This is his opportunity and you will find that he will make the most of it."

Wings Parade for Course 23 was held at 1400 hours for 49 RAAF aircrew and 9 RCAF aircrew.

May 23, 1941 - Australian airmen at a "Wings Parade" ceremony at Uplands. Sir Clive Baillieu, noted Australian and Director General of the British Purchasing Commission in Washington, pinned the "Wings" on their tunics. Most of the men were from Melbourne.

July 16, 1941: No flying as Director Michael Curtiz began filming. Using a background of Harvard aircraft, students of Course 29 and a considerable portion of No. 1 Squadron took part in a representation of a Wings Parade in the course of which Air Marshal Bishop, presenting the Wings, made an address, all for the movies.

Wings Parade held in the Drill Hall at 1400 hours. Group Captain J.L.A. deNiverville, officer commanding the school addressed the group before presenting the 'wings' to 56 RAAF graduates.

"This ceremony is more significant than any other, for it exemplifies in a practical way the close bonds of unity which exist between the various parts of the Empire.

"We have valued your friendship and believe that your presence here has helped cement still more strongly the ties between us. But before all, this wings parade proclaims that we are not just separate nations working together. We are a unit - one people with one enterprise, one victory.

"You have set for yourselves two objectives. The first is to qualify as pilots. The second is to do your part in the greatest struggle the world has ever seen. You have obtained the first of these objectives. These wings will be the symbol that you have done so.

"Your instructors speak highly of your work and Course 31 will be recorded in the history of this training station as one of the top courses. It is one in which five members won special distinction, 21 distinguished passes and the balance an excellent average.

"We know you will be able to give a good account of yourselves, for you have the right stuff in you. We know you will do as your fathers did in 1914-18.

"Judging from the distinguished gathering I see here, I have no doubt that the many friends you have made among the population of Ottawa and elsewhere will have fond memories of you and follow your progress overseas with the greatest interest.

"I have been authorized to say that. Commencing within the next few months, the policy will be to release a proportion of flying instructors for overseas service month by month.

"So to all instructors of this station I would say: 'Be patient, carry on the good work. In due course you too will have your heart's desire.' "

"They have worked faithfully and ungrudgingly, flying as many hours in a few months as a peacetime pilot would do in a year."

Leading the class was Paul C. J. Brickhill, aviation and defence writer of the Sydney Sun, and decendent of two generations of newspapermen.

Tasmania, known by Australians as "the pimple on the pumpkin," was represented by +(401083) Basil Frederick 'Fred' Wilmot of Launceston - later KIA 467 Sqn. and W. Waddell of Hobart.

Wilmot stated after the wings ceremony: "We're proud to represent the pimple, but we could do with a few more from the island. We need 'em among all these Aussies."

Prior to the wings parade the Australians held a wings graduation dinner at the Chateau Laurier. Sergeant Harold Edgar Dimmock, one of the graduates, addressed the invited guests with a toast to the RCAF.

"We really met the commanding officer and we owe the officers a devil of a lot. Only for them we would not be wearing what we are (wings). The ground staff did a particularly good job and put up with a lot. We have made some jolly good friends in Canada. We definately know the RCAF has contributed greatly to the feats in this war."

Dimmock was killed in action June 2, 1942 during operations to Essen.

August 15, 1941: At 0230 hours +(403352) Leading Aircraftman Harry William Long of Balgowlah, New South Wales, crashed in Harvard 2689 approximately 3 miles from the aerodrome shortly after taking off on night flying practice. He died at 0740 hours.

Course 37: September 2 - November 21, 1941

First group of New Zealand airmen to receive their wings at Uplands.

Wing Commander F.C. Seavill, a native New Zealander addressed the 61 graduates.

"You are the first batch of New Zealanders, but not the first Anzacs to pass through this school.

"This school sets a particularly high standard and your work, therefore, is all the more creditable. Since the inception of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan, New Zealand has been drawn closer to Canada. New Zealand is contributing a great deal towards the plan although it only has a population of a million and a half people.

"It is a mistaken opinion of the public that if large numbers of planes are produced and the training plan turns out the airmen to fly them that we should have a huge air force.

"The point overlooked, however, is that without an efficient ground crew there is little that the pilot can do. A pilot cannot take his aircraft out on operations if it is not in perfect working order.

"So you can realize the great amount of work the ground crew is called upon to do but when you are posted to your squadron you will realize it more. The ground crew takes a great pride in its work and you will do the same.

"I wish you every success, God-speed and good luck."

Wing Commander William MacBrien, officer commanding the station, congratulated the airmen on completion of their course. He then introduced Wing Commander Seavill, who pinned the wings on each graduate.

Leading Aircraftman (NZ412761) Lloyd Robert Stuchbery - later KIA, 489 Sqn. of Nelson, N.Z., graduated with the highest honors in the class.

Included in the group was a full-blooded Maori, Leading Aircraftman H.E. Metekingi, of Wanganui, N.Z. Another to graduate was Leading Aircraftman W.J. Higgins. A native of Kensington, P.E.I., he joined the air force in New Zealand where he was working.

the Hon. C.G. ‘Chubby’ Power, Minister of National Defence for Air, presented wings and addressed the 66 graduates:

"This wings parade has special significance. This week sees the opening of the last school provided under the plan and therefore the completion of the period of organization and construction. Looking back at the anxious and difficult days through which we have passed, we can say this plan is a success. We are now in the period of intensive production.

“When the announcement was made of the December 19, 1939 agreement bringing the plan into operation there were few who knew the implication of it. Now Canada knows it, Australia knows it and New Zealand knows it. I have had a cable from Sir Archibald Sinclair of the warmest congratulations, indicating that Britain knows it and one thing is sure and that is that Hitler knows it.

“The operational training units in Britain are filled with our graduates. The Canadian, the New Zealand, the Australian squadrons are in full active operation and the R.A.F. squadrons everywhere have in their ranks in the air flying over enemy territory every day, every hour, your comrades who have been through the same training schools as you.

“It is indeed significant that in this very class there are representatives of all the nations who are partners in the scheme and, in addition, representatives of our new partner in the greater job of work which confronts us – the United States.

“As this war has become a world-wide war, so this has become a world-wide plan. The head of your class comes from South America (117449 - Donald Iain Dewar), another comes from Belfast, and every province in Canada is represented.

“You come from wherever the cause of liberty is still worshipped. You go forth to fight for freedom. We in Canada, as well as our partners in the agreement, can promise you our fullest support, both now and in the future.

“You need no words of mine to encourage you. Your long period of preliminary training is over. You are ready for the supreme test of meeting the enemy. Your comrades who have gone before have met the test with courage, with heroism, worthy of the nations to which they belong. I know you will all be true to the glorious tradition they have established."

On Tuesday, January 1, 1942, the class received an informal visit from Sir Charles Portal, marshal of the RAF, when Winston Churchill visited the station. The class was in session with the flight instructor busy outlining instructions for a cross-country hop when Sir Charles entered the room alone and said:

"Pardon me, gentlemen, may I sit down?"

Sir Charles chatted informally with the students for a few minutes before rejoining the party to continue the inspection.

Course 49 - March 14 - June 5, 1942

His Excellency the Earl of Athlone, Governor General of Canada, pinned wings on the graduates.

"I have come here today to present you with the most coveted prize on the completion of the hardest and the most important part of your training in the air force. You have won your wings and I congratulate you on what you have achieved.

"In none of the three services is the desire to win through more important than that of the air force, and in Canada, where we have the priviledge of making friends with so many of the sons of Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the United States of America, as well as our own boys, we know we can depend on you in thjis respect and to give a good account of yourselves when the time comes.

"Already many of that great force of young men who have been trained on this continent of North America have gained distinction in all parts of the world, and I know that your desire will be to emulate their example and to uphold the high standard required in every respect in so fine a corps as the air force.

"Many of your senior officers of today in the Royal Canadian Air Force won their wings and more than their wings during the last war and to them must be given full credit for this wonderful organization - the combined air training plan - which has give to the Allies a formidable addition in the air second to none in the strength and efficiency, and which with the ever-increasing production of machines of all types will finally bring destruction and annihilation to our enemies."

April 25, 1942: At 14:50 hours in Harvard 2667, LAC A.C.W. Bishop groundlooped at main aerodrome. Serious damage to aircraft; pilot uninjured.

Course 55: May 9 - August 28, 1942

Graduates received their pilot wings from Air Vice Marshal Robert Leckie, D.S.O., D.S.C., D.F.C., air member for training council. He addressed the graduates before presenting their wings.

"The air forces of the United Nations now equal and soon will surpass the maximum strength that the Axis can ever hope to put in the air.

"To you goes the honor of serving in this great air fleet and in no inconsiderable portion of it, The Royal Canadian Air Force.

"You have inherited proud traditions that have their roots in a previous German war wherein Canadians stretched their wings and fought their way to a place in history and you wear the coveted badge of the combatant pilot - the badge that is proudly worn by the air forces of the British Empire all over the world.

"You are going against a tough and seasoned foe - no coward, skilful, resourceful and still flushed with all too many easy victories. But do not let anyone tell you he is a superman. He is not. Your fathers have met him before in aerial combat and on equal terms defeated him. You will do the same because you are better trained, better men and your cause is just.

"Mike," the Great Dane station mascot made his presence known during the ceremony - stealing a lady's umbrella and grabbing the sleeve on an officer. A couple of officers and policeman wrestled with Mike to extract the umbrella from his grip. He was then escorted out of the hangar and confined to barracks. It was reported that Mike had the run of the station and obeyed only Wing Commander William O'Brien, the station officer commanding.

Ottawa Rough Rider football star Anthony Charles 'Tony' Golab was one of the graduates. Golab later commented to reporters about received his wings.

"It was the greatest thrill of my life. I got a bigger kick out of it than I do slipping across the enemy's goal line in a football game.

"You can take it from me that the esprit de corps in the Royal Canadian Air Force tops anything I've ever seen in football."

Golab's brother Frank also served as a fighter pilot with the RCAF. He graduated with Course 25 - No. 10 SFTS, Dauphin. Frank Golab was captured by the Japanese in Java. He described his captivity in October 1945 when he returned to Canada.

"At first the food was good, then it got bad, then it got scarce. Finally there was practically none."

June 20, 1942: Leading Aircraftman William Caesar 'Bill' Oquendo, New York City, was killed in flying accident near Brockville. Oquendo was one of four Americans who played with the 1941 Ottawa Rough Riders football team and also trained with Course 55. Shelby Buck and Raymond Luis Gregg were killed after transferring to the USAAF. Mike Klimenko was killed in a flying accident at No. 1 OTU Bagotville.

August 23, 1942: At 10:30 hours, while carrying out solo cross country exercise, in Harvard 2592, LAC C.E. Durnin, was returning from Trenton to Uplands. He was carrying out unauthorized low flying and struck a pole supporting wires across Bob's Lake, tearing off a section of his starboard wing.

September 18, 1942: (R/137101) LAC Rosier M. Cross and (R/125936) LAC Arthur Wellington Ault killed in Harvard 3828 while carrying out cross country navigation course near Lake Calabogie.

Course 61: August 1 - November 20, 1942

Wings Parade was held in No. 1 Hangar at 1500 hours. Wings were presented by the U.S. Ambassador to Canada, Jay Pierrepont Moffatt. 60 graduates, of which 15 were Americans, and 1 RAF.

"You are graduating at the great moment in history when the United Nations are turning from the defensive to the offensive.

"As the dramatic events of North Africa and elsewhere prove, you are joining your comrades at a moment when, for the first time, we are advancing on a vast scale.

"For you we trust that service will not be the dogged, difficult task of defence, but that it will be the inspiration of offense. You are the first class from Uplands under this bright star."

Moffatt said he was proud that there were 15 Americans in the graduating class who felt the joint cause was so indivisible that they were as happy to fight in the air force blue as in the khaki uniform worn south of the border.

"That they should so feel is a tribute as well to the consideration they have been shown, to the friendliness, hospitality and fair play which are proverbial in Canada, and to the close community of interests which we neighbors have.

"Your class proves again that Canadians and Americans cannot only think alike but act together and common action is the best proof of the sure foundations upon which Canadian-American friendship rests. May you experience that exaltation that men of your calling especially enjoy and return after victory to a better, brighter, happier world.

"We hope that along the flyways of the fighting zones you will all become Beurlings. But, whether you have that good fortune or not you will always have our praise and thanks.

"Today is our chance to tell you, face to face, that we pledge ourselves to back you to the hilt. You carry our standard higher and farther forward than anyone else in the battle and we can see that your total effort over there is sustained by our total efforts over here."

Group Captain G.G. Banting of the United Kingdom Air Liason Mission addressed the graduates and pinned wings on the tunic of each pilot. He read a speech prepared for delivery to graduates by Air Vice-Marshal L.L.D. McKean, C.B., O.B.E., Chief Liason Officer, United Kingdom Air Liason Mission, who had consented to make the presentation, prior to becoming ill.

"Determine to excel in whatever jobs you are employed upon; seek new knowledge to improve your own; don't hesistate to ask questions from those who have accumulated knowledge from hard-won experience in battle.

"You will be going into battle against tough fighters who will show you no mercy. Well, just be tougher, smash them again and again until you have utterly crushed them and driven them from the sky forever.

"The Royal Air Force and the Dominions' Air Forces have built up imperishable traditions of the highest order for bravery and utter devotion to duty. On each one of you, on me and on all of us in the services, the responsibility rests to maintain, and, if possible, add glory to those traditions.

"If you are willing to accept my advice two things are possible - you may end up becoming chief of air staff for your service; or what is infinitely more important, you will probably come out of the war alive and kicking.

"Be determined, therefore, never under any circumstances to let your service down. By carelessness or selfish behavior one individual can do real harm to his service. Honestly I envy you from the bottom of my heart - I would gladly change places with you, but I don't think I would have any takers.

"The really efficient airman is the one who never stops learning all his life.

"Show, as I am confident you will, that there are no superiors in the sky to the graduates produced by this historic and magnificent air training plan which had its birth in Canada and is now at its full and impressive strength. Godspeed and good hunting to you all."

Wilson George Leach - Course 77

Wilson was born in Chalk River, Ontario. Following Second World War service as a Pilot Instructor, he entered the University of Western Ontario, graduating in Medicine in 1952. Wilson rejoined the RCAF and completed post-graduate training in biophysics in London before joining the Institute of Aviation Medicine in Toronto. As a result of his research in high altitude physiology, he was awarded the McKee Trans-Canada Trophy in 1960 and subsequently, in 1974, was inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame. After his years of work in research he was employed at National Defence Headquarters, Ottawa as Director of Medical Personnel, Deputy Surgeon General, and Surgeon General of the Canadian Forces.
